Every village and family experiences tradition differently, while contemporary life combines inherited knowledge with education, trade and other activities. A worthwhile visit is an opportunity to listen and understand, not to seek a performance prepared solely for visitors.

What a visit may include

When hosts and conditions allow, the experience may include fields, local water-management practices, homes viewed by invitation and community spaces. The exact programme must be agreed locally. Visitors should never enter houses, land or ceremonies without permission and must ask before photographing anyone.

Responsible behaviour

Visit with a guide who communicates with hosts and explains the context.

Ask before taking photographs or video.

Do not give money or gifts directly to children.

Buy crafts only when genuinely interested and agree prices respectfully.

Avoid simplistic comparisons between Sonjo and Maasai communities.

Planning the route

A Sonjo visit can combine with Lake Natron, Engare Sero or Ol Doinyo Lengai.
