The climb involves steep volcanic ground, a demanding night ascent and broad Rift Valley views.

What the climb is like

Departures are normally at night to avoid the strongest heat and reach the upper mountain around sunrise. Loose rock and ash demand balance, endurance and prior mountain-walking experience. This is not an easy excursion or suitable for everyone.

A local guide is essential. Volcanic activity, weather and trail condition must be reviewed immediately before departure. The guide may shorten or cancel the climb for safety. The summit environment changes and travellers must never leave the instructed route or approach unstable areas.

Preparation and equipment

Mountain boots with strong grip and spare socks.

Head torch with spare batteries, layers and wind protection.

Enough water, energy food, sun protection and hat.

Trekking poles if already familiar with them, especially for descent.

Travel insurance covering the activity and evacuation.

Is it suitable for you?

Share your experience, fitness, injuries and dates honestly.
