This 16-day Tanzania journey is a planning example combining safari, walking, volcanic landscapes, the Usambara Mountains and the Indian Ocean. It is not a fixed package: park order, transfers, ferries or flights, walking stages and accommodation must be checked for the actual dates.
Days 1–4: Northern safari circuit
Begin around Arusha with Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti. The number of Serengeti nights and chosen region depend on season. Avoid forcing crater and long transfers into the same overloaded day.
Days 5–7: Piaya and Lake Natron
A supported walking route may link Piaya, intermediate camps and Lake Natron. Exact stages depend on permission, water, heat, group fitness and vehicle access. Read the Piaya guide.
Day 8: Ol Doinyo Lengai or recovery
The Ol Doinyo Lengai climb is steep and subject to volcanic, trail and weather conditions. It should remain optional. Travellers not suited to the ascent need an alternative rest or locally authorised activity.
Day 9: Tarangire and Arusha
Continue towards Tarangire if distances and gate times allow. A nearby overnight may be more realistic than adding a long drive back to Arusha.
Days 10–12: Usambara and the coast
Travel to Lushoto for Usambara walks and village landscapes, then continue to the coast. Road time is substantial and should be checked. Coastal activities depend on the chosen base, tides and authorised operators.
Days 13–16: Zanzibar
Reach Zanzibar using a confirmed scheduled flight or authorised ferry connection appropriate to the current route. Do not assume a historic Pangani service operates. Balance Stone Town, beach time and optional activities, then choose the most reliable onward flight rather than automatically returning by road to Arusha.
Price and inclusions
Historic fixed prices are not valid quotations. Current cost depends on group size, season, park fees, domestic transport, camps or lodges and activities. A proposal identifies transport, accommodation, meals, staff and fees, plus exclusions such as international flights, visa, insurance, optional activities, drinks, tips and personal expenses.
Is this route realistic for you?
Sixteen days can still feel busy when safari, trekking and coast are combined. We may recommend removing a region or adding nights. Send your dates and priorities for a coherent tailor-made version.
