Jozani Forest, within Jozani–Chwaka Bay National Park, protects one of Unguja’s most important natural landscapes. It is best known for the endemic Zanzibar red colobus.
This is not a large-mammal safari. A guided walk reveals tropical forest, primates and the relationship between woodland, wetlands and Chwaka Bay mangroves.
What can you see?
Zanzibar red colobus
Groups may move through the canopy or near the ground. Even habituated individuals are wild animals: never touch, feed, surround or block them.
Other wildlife and vegetation
Other monkeys, birds, butterflies and small animals may appear, but sightings are never guaranteed. A guide explains plants, habitats and signs visitors might miss.
Chwaka Bay mangroves
Where the park route and boardwalk are open, mangroves show how coastal water, forest and communities connect.
Duration and equipment
Allow roughly one to two hours, depending on the open trail, group pace, wildlife and ground conditions. Bring closed grippy footwear, water, repellent, light rain protection and binoculars if interested in birds. Current hours, access and fees should be confirmed.
