This six-day local journey with Roko combines travel through northern Tanzania, walking and carefully arranged community encounters. It links Mto wa Mbu, Engaruka, Kerimasi and Lake Natron, with Rift Valley landscapes and views towards Ol Doinyo Lengai.
It is not a conventional vehicle-focused safari. Several days include walking and suit travellers interested in land, culture and everyday life.
Six-day outline
Day 1: Mto wa Mbu to Engaruka
Meet the guide and travel to Engaruka. Review the programme, local conditions and equipment for the following walks.
Day 2: Engaruka to Kerimasi
Walk for approximately four and a half hours, depending on group pace and trail conditions. Volcanic landscapes, Kerimasi and Ol Doinyo Lengai shape the route. Overnight arrangements depend on the confirmed departure.
Day 3: Kerimasi to Lake Natron
Continue on foot towards Lake Natron before meeting a vehicle around lunchtime. Broad lake and Rift Valley views accompany the journey. Any Maasai community encounter is arranged with consent and local coordination.
Day 4: Lake Natron
Explore the lake area. The precise activity depends on season, accessibility and conditions and is confirmed before travel.
Day 5: Lake Natron to Engaruka
Return towards Engaruka, adapting stops and times to track conditions.
Day 6: Engaruka to Mto wa Mbu
Complete the return and coordinate onward transfers.
Difficulty and preparation
The programme includes several-hour walks on uneven terrain. Travellers need suitable fitness, broken-in hiking footwear, sun protection, water and clothing for temperature changes. Children, mobility limitations and dietary requirements must be discussed before booking.
